RBA Hike Bets Lift Australian Dollar to Fresh Highs

The Australian Dollar (AUD) extended its winning streak on Friday, with AUD/USD trading around 0.7200 during Asian hours as investors increased bets that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) could resume monetary tightening sooner than previously expected.

The latest strength in the currency reflects a combination of strong domestic inflation, shifting interest-rate expectations, and a supportive global environment for higher-yielding currencies

Hotter Inflation Strengthens RBA Tightening Bets

The primary catalyst behind the Australian Dollar’s latest advance is the stronger-than-expected July inflation report. The data reinforced concerns that domestic price pressures remain sufficiently persistent to prevent the RBA from easing policy and instead potentially require another interest-rate increase.

Higher inflation is particularly significant for the Australian currency because it directly influences expectations for the RBA cash rate. If inflation remains above the central bank’s comfort zone, policymakers have greater incentive to maintain restrictive financial conditions or increase borrowing costs to prevent price pressures from becoming entrenched.

Financial markets have responded rapidly. Traders are now assigning approximately a 50% probability to an RBA rate increase at the September meeting, compared with only 17% previously. Markets are also effectively fully pricing a November rate hike, demonstrating how dramatically expectations have shifted following the inflation data.

Major Banks Bring Forward Rate Forecasts

The change in market pricing has been accompanied by increasingly hawkish forecasts from Australia’s major financial institutions. National Australia Bank (NAB) now expects the RBA cash rate to rise to 4.6% next month, implying that policymakers could act as early as September.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and ANZ currently anticipate a rate increase in November, although both acknowledge that an earlier move remains possible. Such forecasts are important for currency markets because interest-rate differentials can significantly influence international capital flows.

Jackson Hole Speech in Focus

Traders are particularly focused on comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, whose remarks could influence expectations for future US interest rates and Treasury yields. Any indication that US monetary policy could remain restrictive for longer may support the US Dollar and place pressure on AUD/USD.

Conversely, signals pointing toward lower US rates or declining Treasury yields could reinforce demand for higher-yielding currencies. Consequently, the Federal Reserve’s policy communication represents an important near-term risk for the Australian Dollar’s rally.

AUD/USD Technical Outlook

From a technical perspective, AUD/USD remains firmly bullish, with the pair trading near 0.7200 and maintaining its upward momentum for a fourth consecutive session.

The exchange rate is positioned comfortably above both the nine-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and the 50-day EMA. This alignment indicates that the short- and medium-term trend remains positive, with buyers maintaining control of the broader near-term structure.

However, momentum indicators are beginning to signal that the advance could be becoming stretched. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) has climbed to approximately 70.7, moving into overbought territory.

An RSI above 70 does not necessarily signal an immediate reversal, but it indicates that buying momentum has become exceptionally strong and that the pair may be vulnerable to a period of consolidation or corrective pressure.

Key Support Levels

On the downside, the nine-day EMA near 0.7160 represents the first important dynamic support level. A sustained move above this area would preserve the immediate bullish structure, while a break below it could indicate that momentum is beginning to moderate.

The next major technical floor is the 50-day EMA around 0.7070. A deeper correction toward this level could attract renewed dip-buying interest if the underlying bullish trend remains intact.

Further below, horizontal support can be identified around 0.6688, followed by 0.6434 and 0.6348. These levels represent progressively deeper areas of historical support and would become more relevant if the Australian Dollar suffered a significant deterioration in fundamentals or global risk sentiment.

Outlook

The Australian Dollar’s latest advance reflects a powerful combination of higher RBA rate-hike expectations, stronger inflation, favourable yield dynamics and bullish technical momentum

The repricing of monetary-policy expectations has substantially strengthened the AUD’s fundamental backdrop, with markets now considering an earlier tightening cycle increasingly plausible.

Nevertheless, the RSI above 70 warns that AUD/USD is entering technically stretched territory. Near-term price action is therefore likely to depend on whether buyers can sustain momentum above 0.7200 while the market awaits further guidance on both Australian and US monetary policy.

For now, the balance remains bullish for AUD/USD, but the upcoming Jackson Hole communication could prove decisive. A combination of firm RBA expectations and capped US yields would provide further support for the Australian Dollar, whereas a hawkish Federal Reserve signal could trigger profit-taking and a technical pullback.
