Katie Peer illustrates a beautiful story, “I Got My Period” touches and inspires readers. This short story is a breath of fresh air in a world where potentially challenging topics are typically handled in a less-than-endearing way. The author, Katie Peer, did a fine job writing and illustrating a beautiful story that is not just emotionally sensitive but picture-amazing.

She dedicates it to her little sister and writes a unique story about a little girl’s experience after she gets her first period at school. Amy, the main character, is autistic and is not exactly sure what is going on when she reaches out to the school nurse. Katie’s non-binary babysitter, Beck, saves the day by picking Amy up at school and sharing their own period experience, as well as getting Amy’s dad up to speed on the basics that he needs to know to help Amy successfully navigate her first-period experience.

This book, apart from other first-period experience literature, is how intentionally the author pulls in multiple underrepresented perspectives of this first-period experience.

At the end of the book, the author’s note demonstrates a depth of understanding of why the messages conveyed in “I Got My Period” are so important.
