NZD/USD Holds Above 0.5950 as Markets Await Fed Signals

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) strengthened against the US dollar on Friday, with NZD/USD trading near 0.5960 during Asian hours as investors reassessed the outlook for Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) monetary policy. Praxes Group’s brokers take a deeper dive into the subject in this article.

The Kiwi has benefited from a more hawkish central-bank stance, while traders are now turning their attention to the Jackson Hole Symposium, where Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to speak.

The currency pair’s latest advance reflects a combination of firm domestic inflation expectations and positioning ahead of an important US monetary-policy event. However, gains could become more limited later in the session if Warsh adopts a hawkish tone, potentially strengthening the US dollar (USD) and creating renewed downside pressure on NZD/USD.

Hotter New Zealand Inflation Strengthens RBNZ Hike Expectations

A key driver of the New Zealand dollar’s recent resilience has been the country’s stronger-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data for the second quarter. The inflation reading has reinforced market expectations that the RBNZ will continue normalizing monetary policy despite evidence of softness in parts of the domestic economy.

According to BNZ analysts, the central bank is expected to deliver a 25-basis-point interest-rate increase at its September meeting, taking the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to 2.75%. Market pricing currently assigns a 94% probability to such a move, making the September hike close to a certainty from a market perspective.

The expected increase is particularly significant because investors are also assessing how far the RBNZ could take its tightening cycle. The central bank is expected to signal additional increases, with markets looking toward a potential terminal rate near 3.5%

BNZ, however, maintains a more aggressive internal forecast, projecting that the OCR could eventually reach 4.0% by May 2027.

Jackson Hole Becomes the Next Major Catalyst

Despite the supportive domestic backdrop, the Jackson Hole Symposium is the key near-term event for NZD/USD traders. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech could offer clues on the Fed’s view of inflation, growth and future interest rates.

A hawkish message would likely strengthen the US dollar as markets price more restrictive policy. This could lift US Treasury yields, raise the opportunity cost of holding lower-yielding currencies and limit NZD/USD upside.

Conversely, a dovish outlook could weaken the Greenback and allow the New Zealand dollar to extend its recovery. Traders will therefore focus on comments about inflation persistence, labor-market conditions, growth and the neutral interest rate.

The timing is important as NZD/USD approaches key resistance around 0.5990. A decisive break could signal growing market expectations of further RBNZ tightening.

Technical Analysis: NZD/USD Retains a Bullish Bias

From a technical perspective, the near-term outlook remains constructive while NZD/USD trades above key moving-average support. The pair is holding above its 100-day simple moving average (SMA) and the middle line of the Bollinger Bands, reinforcing the view that the recent recovery remains technically intact.

Momentum indicators also favor the bulls. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) is around 63, indicating positive momentum while approaching, but not yet reaching, traditional overbought territory. The reading suggests buyers remain in control, although momentum could begin to moderate as the pair approaches the upper boundary of its recent trading range.

The first major upside obstacle is the Bollinger Bands’ upper band near 0.5990. A sustained daily close above this threshold would strengthen the bullish technical structure and could open the door to a more substantial extension of the recovery.

On the downside, the 0.5910 area represents initial support around the Bollinger middle band. A break below this level would expose the 100-day SMA near 0.5845, followed closely by the lower Bollinger Band around 0.5830. This support cluster could help contain deeper corrections as long as the broader bullish structure remains intact.

Outlook

The NZD/USD outlook remains cautiously bullish, supported by expectations of further RBNZ tightening and stronger domestic inflation pressures. The prospect of a 25-basis-point hike to 2.75% in September has provided a clear fundamental catalyst for the Kiwi, while elevated short positioning could amplify gains if traders are forced to unwind bearish bets.

Nevertheless, the Jackson Hole Symposium introduces a significant event risk. A hawkish signal from Warsh could boost the US dollar and interrupt NZD/USD’s recovery, while a softer Fed outlook could allow the pair to challenge the 0.5990 resistance zone and potentially target higher levels.

For now, the combination of RBNZ hawkishness, supportive technical momentum and heavy NZD short positioning favors the New Zealand dollar, but the next decisive move is likely to depend on the interaction between New Zealand’s tightening cycle and the Federal Reserve’s evolving interest-rate outlook.
