The USD/JPY pair continues to consolidate around 158.55 during Friday’s Asian session after staging a strong rebound from this week’s low near 154.42, reached following the latest Japanese currency intervention. In this article, Sylverix’s brokers take a closer look at this topic.
Price action remains confined beneath the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the 161.99–154.42 decline, with traders refraining from placing aggressive directional bets ahead of the US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report.
The pair is trading close to the upper end of its weekly range, indicating that bullish momentum remains intact despite the ongoing pause. The upcoming labor market data is expected to determine whether buyers can generate sufficient momentum to force a breakout above the current resistance zone.
Fundamentals Continue to Favor the US Dollar
The broader fundamental backdrop remains supportive for the US Dollar. Markets continue to price in the possibility of at least one additional Federal Reserve rate hike, while sticky inflation, elevated Treasury yields, and persistent geopolitical uncertainty continue to support demand for the greenback.
The resulting yield differential remains heavily skewed in favor of the US Dollar. The spread between US and Japanese government bond yields continues to encourage capital flows into dollar-denominated assets, providing an important medium-term tailwind for USD/JPY.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Yen remains under pressure as domestic economic data continues to disappoint. Household Spending declined for a seventh consecutive month, reinforcing concerns that domestic demand remains weak.
The softer consumption data reduces expectations that the Bank of Japan will deliver another interest rate increase in the near term, keeping monetary policy significantly more accommodative than in the United States.
As long as this policy divergence persists, the underlying bias continues to favor additional upside in USD/JPY.
38.2% Fibonacci Retracement Remains the Immediate Technical Barrier
From a technical perspective, the recovery from 154.42 remains constructive, although price continues to encounter selling pressure near the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement at 158.55.
This level represents the first major retracement barrier following the decline from the 161.99 multi-decade high. A sustained move above 158.55 would confirm that buyers have regained short-term control and increase the probability of an extension toward higher Fibonacci resistance levels.
The next upside objective is located at the 50.0% Fibonacci retracement near 159.61, followed by the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement at 160.66. These levels represent the next significant resistance zones where bullish momentum could temporarily fade.
A decisive break above 160.66 would expose the 161.99 yearly high and significantly strengthen the broader bullish structure.
Momentum Indicators Suggest Improving Buying Pressure
Short-term momentum indicators continue to improve despite the recent consolidation.
The MACD on the 4-hour chart remains in positive territory, reflecting strengthening upside momentum following this week’s recovery. The widening distance between the MACD line and its signal line suggests that buying pressure is gradually increasing.
At the same time, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is holding close to 50, indicating a neutral momentum profile. This reading suggests that neither buyers nor sellers currently have complete control, while also confirming there is ample room for another bullish extension before the market approaches overbought territory above 70.
The combination of a positive MACD and neutral RSI typically reflects a consolidation phase within an emerging recovery, rather than signaling trend exhaustion.
Support Structure Remains Well Defined
On the downside, the first important support is located at the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement around 157.26. This level coincides with the recent breakout area and should provide the first layer of buying interest during any corrective decline.
Failure to hold above 157.26 would expose the next significant support near 156.50, while a deeper correction could extend toward the structural floor around 155.17.
Only a sustained move below 155.17 would invalidate the current recovery structure and shift the short-term technical outlook back in favor of sellers.
Until then, pullbacks are likely to be viewed as buying opportunities rather than the beginning of a broader reversal.
Technical Outlook
The USD/JPY pair remains in a short-term consolidation beneath the key 158.55 resistance level while maintaining a constructive technical structure.
The 38.2% Fibonacci retracement continues to cap immediate gains, although improving MACD momentum, a neutral RSI, and favorable interest rate differentials suggest that the broader bias remains tilted to the upside.
A confirmed break above 158.55 would shift focus toward 159.61, followed by 160.66, with the longer-term objective remaining the 161.99 yearly high. Conversely, initial downside protection is seen at 157.26, while 155.17 represents the key structural support that bulls must defend to preserve the ongoing recovery trend.
