EUR/JPY is consolidating near 183.90 during Wednesday’s Asian session, extending its subdued performance for a second consecutive trading day. The cross remains trapped between its short-term and medium-term exponential moving averages, leaving the technical structure neutral-to-bearish while price holds below the 184.54 resistance zone.
This article provides a more detailed examination of the topic by Kepler Group’s brokers.
The current configuration shows EUR/JPY trading approximately 0.64 points below the 50-day EMA and 0.44 points above the nine-day EMA. This narrow technical range highlights an increasingly important 183.46–184.54 corridor. A confirmed break from either boundary could determine the next directional leg.
EUR/JPY Technical Outlook: Bearish Pressure Below 184.54
The 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at 184.54 remains the primary technical resistance. EUR/JPY has failed to establish a sustained position above this medium-term trend indicator, keeping the broader recovery vulnerable to renewed selling.
From the current level near 183.90, a move to 184.54 would represent an advance of approximately 0.35%. A decisive daily close above the 50-day EMA, followed by sustained trading above 185.00, would provide a stronger bullish confirmation.
Such a move would indicate that buyers have regained control of the medium-term trend rather than merely producing another short-lived rebound.
Above 184.54, the next major upside objective is the all-time high of 187.95, recorded on April 17. The distance from 184.54 to 187.95 is approximately 3.41 points, while a move from the current 183.90 level to 187.95 would require roughly a 2.20% advance.
A sustained break above 187.95 would establish a fresh record high and significantly alter the longer-term technical structure.
Nine-Day EMA Defines Immediate Support
The nine-day EMA at 183.46 is the first layer of downside protection. This short-term moving average is only around 0.24% below the current market price, making it a critical level for short-term traders.
A daily close below 183.46 would increase the probability of further downside and confirm that the recent recovery is losing momentum. The move would also place EUR/JPY below its short-term trend average, creating a more clearly bearish technical setup.
The first major downside target would be the 179.37 low recorded on August 3. From 183.46, a decline to 179.37 represents approximately 4.09 points, or 2.23%. From the current 183.90 area, the potential decline is approximately 2.47%.
If selling accelerates below 179.37, attention would shift toward 175.70, the nine-month low. The decline from 179.37 to 175.70 would amount to approximately 3.67 points, while a move from 183.90 to 175.70 would represent a decline of roughly 4.46%.
RSI at 48.21 Confirms Neutral Momentum
Momentum indicators currently provide limited directional confirmation. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 48.21, only 1.79 points below the 50.00 neutral threshold.
The reading indicates that EUR/JPY is neither overbought nor oversold, with market momentum broadly balanced. However, the RSI remaining below 50.00 provides a marginal bearish signal and is consistent with price trading below the 50-day EMA.
A recovery in the RSI above 50.00, followed by a move toward 55–60, would strengthen the bullish momentum case. Conversely, a decline below 45.00 would indicate increasing downside pressure, while a move toward 40.00 would provide stronger confirmation of accelerating bearish momentum.
Therefore, the RSI currently supports a neutral consolidation scenario, but its next directional move could provide an important confirmation signal.
Yen Stabilization Limits EUR/JPY Upside
The Japanese Yen remains a key fundamental variable for the cross. Recent volatility has been influenced by concerns surrounding currency intervention, while subsequent price action suggests that some of the Yen’s intervention-related gains are being maintained.
Yen stabilization creates a potential headwind for EUR/JPY, because renewed JPY strength translates directly into downside pressure on the cross. Conversely, a fresh phase of Yen depreciation could push EUR/JPY back toward the 184.54 EMA resistance and potentially toward 187.95.
The interaction between technical resistance at 184.54 and Yen stabilization therefore remains central to the near-term outlook.
EUR/JPY Forecast: 183.46–184.54 Range Holds the Key
The immediate EUR/JPY structure remains neutral-to-bearish, with price at 183.90, the nine-day EMA at 183.46, the 50-day EMA at 184.54, and the 14-day RSI at 48.21.
A break below 183.46 would expose 179.37, followed by 175.70. A sustained move above 184.54 would invalidate much of the immediate bearish pressure and shift attention toward 187.95.
Until either level is decisively breached, EUR/JPY is likely to remain in a consolidation phase, with 183.46 support and 184.54 resistance defining the key technical boundaries.
